In the sprawling wake of the hot summer months there has been no end to great festivals here in Gibraltar and no end to the tsunami ofhungry festival junkies pushing through the festival gates in order to not miss a thing. The Gib Sun Festival held at Muga on the 22nd of August 2015 was more than successful; starring the fantastic Daniel Stein, best known as DJ Fresh. While we are celebrating his appearance on The Rock it seems he has a lot more to celebrate as he proposed to his fiance that very morning upon his arrival in Gibraltar.

If there was no room for error, there wasn’t room either for attention to detail and creativity as the crowd weren’t just kept entertained with great music, but also an inflatable bouncy boxing ring and inflatable beach toys that where thrown into the crowd.

Two stages kept us entertained as the Gib Sun Festival brought back the The Savannah Stage. Both stages where a constant flurry of color, energy and excitement that heightened one to astronomical levels of music thrill as we where sucked into a whole new high of electronic music.

The decibel level was sky high, causing ones ears to ring if too close to the stage. Both stages a little too close to one another as one could hear the music from both stages at the same time. Once the ground was packed with bodies, stimulated in every area to their best ability this issue was soon resolved.

On the festival grounds, I watched the crowds faces while waiting for the final act, the one and only DJ FRESH. They where hungry. They where ready to satisfy some burning desire and put their eager appetite to rest. We had become greedy after being spoiled for choice with such great DJ’s: The Plump DJ’s, Luke Pompey, Deflo, Cliche, Racs & Lima, Cloud 9, Distrikt 33, Sub Selective Crew, Dan Garcia, Zoosh, Four higher, BassCake, Lazy Daiz, A Guy Called Wayne and The Savannah Stage.

Squeezing through the sweaty bodies and through the fence heading backstage, I looked ahead at the crowd; I could feel the anticipation in their bodies and see the hunger in their eyes as DJ Fresh casually awaited behind the huge speakers before causing the crowd to erupt with cheer and explode with energy as they experienced a whole new dimension of musical satisfaction, a little like a volcano that has been sleeping for many years and has finally been triggered off.

We are beginning to wonder when Gibraltar will slow down, as the festivals have only gotten bigger and better each year. The community of concert goers only continues to grow as we are left hungry for more. This year already seems insurmountable, what with its nearly flawless execution and a lineup that still looks stunning even after it happened. That’s for the future to figure out however, and ours is the task of looking back on the Gib Sun Festival that was, and the legend it will become.
